Addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg this week, DUP MEP Diane Dodds has urged the European Commission to explore ways to provide financial support to those in the Fermanagh area who suffered loss as a result of recent flooding. Diane Dodds MEP said:
"The recent flooding in Fermanagh had a devastating effect on farmland, and indeed other local businesses. When such damage is caused by factors outside of the control of those affected it only increases the sense of despair and helplessness. It is therefore worth exploring all options available to provide assistance to those who suffered loss.
One such avenue that ought to be explored is some form of assistance from Europe. This week in Strasbourg I highlighted to fellow MEPs and the European Commission the devastation caused by the flooding in Fermanagh. The EU has mechanisms, such as the EU Solidarity Fund, that specifically deal with areas that have suffered due to some form of natural disaster. By working alongside areas affected on mainland UK, such as Cumbria, we can maximise efforts to assist those affected in Fermanagh.
I await a written response from the Commission President as to what options are available. In the meantime I would urge DARD, in light of the number of farmers affected, to work alongside DEFRA in seeking European assistance for farmers who have suffered so badly. A UK approach would enhance the case for assistance from Europe and every effort should be made to secure any help available."
