DUP MEP Diane Dodds has written to the European Commission seeking their assistance for victims of flooding in the Fermanagh area. Mrs. Dodds, who is visiting the county next week to survey the damage caused, is also hoping to raise the issue in the European Parliament in December. Commenting after discussions with flood-hit farmers and businessmen from Fermanagh, Mrs. Dodds said:
"The impact of the recent flooding in Fermanagh has had a devastating impact on the land, on business and many householders. It is therefore worth exploring every possible avenue to see if those who have suffered, through no fault of their own, can be compensated in some way for the damage caused.
Having spoken to farmers and businessmen in the county, it is clear that the flooding has had a detrimental effect on their livelihood. With some businesses losing substantial levels of trade, farmers with acres of land under water, and some householders losing everything, it is worth exploring and impressing upon those in Europe that people in Fermanagh, through no fault of their own, need help.
I have written to the European Commission asking if any assistance is available and hope to raise this matter if the opportunity arises in the European Parliament sitting in December. The Parliament at times seems obsessed with climate change and its impact. If they believe flooding is a consequence of climate change they ought to do something practical to help those suffering because of it."
