DUP MEP Diane Dodds has voiced her support to a series of amendments to the 2010 EU Commission budget aimed at preventing funding of family planning programmes which involve coercive abortion and forced sterilisations. Speaking in Strasbourg, DUP MEP Diane Dodds said:
"As someone who strongly believes in the right to life of the unborn child, any proposal that comes before Parliament, such as those tabled this week that seek to prevent funding of family planning programmes which involve coercive abortion and forced sterilisations, will get my full support.
The EU must back up its words of condemnation of these practices with positive action. Parliament must mandate those receiving funding to actively combat sex selective abortion, which is leading to a severe gender imbalance for babies born in certain Asian countries.
The battle against these practices will continue. In Europe, Westminster and Stormont the DUP will resist any attempt to liberalise the law on abortion. As a party we believe in the right to life of the unborn child. We believe that to be the view of the overwhelming majority of people in Northern Ireland and will express such opinions at every opportunity."
