INTRODUCTION
Churches and the faith community are a key part of Northern Ireland society. With devolved government, the Democratic Unionist Party is determined to see collaboration increase between the Stormont administration and the faith sector.
This document does not seek to rehearse the many obvious benefits for individuals from a faith-led life but focuses on some practical manifestations in society. Churches and related organisations input regularly into policy debates on issues such as championing the vulnerable and dignity of life for example. However there is the potential for such groups to be assisted to take a more active role in the practical delivery of projects.
Churches are well-established and a focal point within local communities and much valuable work is carried out by faith-oriented groups in hard to reach areas, often where statutory services are ineffective. We are keen to assist that work and see it expand as we strive to improve the lives of those in our province experiencing greatest disadvantage.
Whilst not yet as smooth or efficient as we wish to make it, devolved government does open opportunities in this area which would never have been remotely possible under Direct Rule Ministers, unfamiliar with Northern Ireland.
This discussion paper outlines some areas where we believe there is the potential to increase collaboration between government and the faith sector. We are keen to hear your views as we develop our policies further. A key advantage of having a locally accountable administration is the opportunity for local people to input into and influence the development of policy.
We look forward to hearing your opinions which can be submitted to consultation@dup.org.uk or by post to: DUP Policy Unit, 91 Dundela Avenue, Belfast. BT4 3BU.
